CHEESMAN PARK
RUSTIC SHELTER

Denver, Colorado

Funding for this project was part of a grant from the Colorado State Historic Fund to preserve this Rustic Style structure.  Few shelters of this architectural style were built and few remain in the mid and Rocky Mountain west.  The gazebo, located at the north end of Cheesman Park, was built in 1906 of elm and pine and restored with elm wood, because naturally occurring chemicals in this wood prevent rotting.  The whole process took about nine months to complete. The Rustic Shelter required all new structural members, except two columns.  White Construction Group had to find enough elm wood to replace the existing material.  Since Dutch Elm disease decimated elm trees across the country and specific pieces were needed to work as the replacement, the task of finding the right wood was a challenge. When elm wood was not available at the end of the project pinewood was used for the seat pieces.   White Construction Group received special recognition from the owner for this outstanding restoration project.
